What to do with an item left behind by a guest
A charger, a piece of clothing, a pair of glasses: this comes up often and is resolved in three simple steps.
1. Let them know quickly
As soon as the item is found, message the guest: many only notice it's missing while unpacking, sometimes days later. Use the "found item left behind" message template.
2. Put the item somewhere safe
Store it in a clearly identified spot (not in the next cleaning's path) to avoid it being thrown out or mixed up with other things.
3. Offer two options, not more
Posting it (at the guest's cost) or picking it up in person covers almost every case. Avoid piling on options, which slows down the decision.
If it's never claimed
Keep it for a reasonable period (a month, for example) before donating or disposing of it; note the date it was found to keep a record.
